Research Description

Dr. Weinstock uses methods of clinical, descriptive, analytic, and experimental epidemiology and health services research to improve our understanding of, and ability to control, cutaneous malignancies including melanoma, keratinocyte (basal and squamous cell) carcinoma, cutaneous lymphoma, and other cutaneous malignancies, and of dysplastic nevi, actinic keratoses, and other cutaneous dysplasias.

Funded Research

  1. VACSP402 (Weinstock) 5/2/1997-5/31/2005 VA Cooperative Studies Program, "VA Topical Tretinoin Chemoprevention (VATTC) Trial". This is a nonmelanoma skin cancer chemoprevention randomized multicenter trial of topical tretinoin.

  2. R01CA78800 (Weinstock) 5/1/1999-2/28/2004 National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute (NIH/NCI) "Skin Self-Examination for Early Detection of Melanoma". This project assesses the effect of a randomized intervention for skin self-examination in the primary care setting.

  3. ROG-01-101-01 (Weinstock) 3/1/2001-2/28/2003 American Cancer Society, "Skin Cancer Chemoprevention Trial Supplement". This supplement increases the power of the VATTC Trial so that it can evaluate additional key endpoints.

  4. R01AR43051 (Weinstock) 5/24/1994-4/30/1999 National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIH/NIAMS) "Skin Cancer Prevention and Control: Educational Intervention Research". This project evaluated interventions for both primary prevention and early detection of melanoma. It included a randomized trial with beachgoers and a second trial with primary care clinicians.

  5. P01CA50087 (Prochaska) 7/1/1994-4/30/1999 NIH/NCI "Accelerating the Process of Change for Cancer Prevention". This project sought to evaluate multi-channel multi-component intervention for the prevention and early detection of cancer at multiple sites. Dr. Weinstock was involved in the design and analysis of the skin cancer portion.

  6. No number (Weinstock) 7/12/1999-12/31/1999 Rhode Island Cancer Council, "Melanoma Early Detection". This project funded production of intervention materials.
