Students in U.S. medical schools may apply to our Clinical Electives Program. Students in international medical schools who are in their final year of education may apply to participate in our final-year electives.
Visiting Students Enrolled in US Medical Schools
Inquiries are welcome from students currently attending other U.S. medical schools who wish to participate in our Clinical Elective Programs. We are unable to accept requests for a basic (required) clerkship experience in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry Family Medicine, or Community Health.
Acceptance for an elective is made on a first-come, first-served basis. Priority in scheduling electives is given to Brown students up until May 15 of each year. Applications for the next academic year (these include periods of time beyond the calendar linked here, will be accepted after mid-March). Please be advised that there is a $150 application fee per elective. Please adhere to our schedule of dates (see calendar). Since the availability of particular electives vary, it is suggested that you request alternative electives and/or dates.
We will not accept applications more than six months prior to the start date of the rotation.
Note: Applications from US/Canadian visiting students for electives taking place between May 2015 and April 2016 will not be accepted until March 2015. We are also in the process of setting up VSAS applications. Notification will appear here when VSAS is ready to accept applications.
We expect visiting students to honor their commitment once they have been accepted to participate in an elective. Please note when requesting a "restricted elective" - advanced clerkships in medicine (333), surgery (418 or 419), pediatrics (463); - these electives cannot be cancelled once confirmed. All visiting students must be covered by malpractice or personal liability and health insurance and must submit proof of immunizations with their application. A maximum of three months (12 weeks) may be spent in clinical electives at Brown University. There is no tuition charge for a student who is enrolled in good standing at his/her U.S. medical school.
The availability of housing is variable and cannot be guaranteed. See Office of Rental Facilities.
The Clerkship Assistant, Linda Conte, is available via phone at (401) 863-2293 or via email at Linda_Conte@brown.edu.
