Visiting International Medical Students (VIMS)

World-renowned Alpert Medical School, a national leader in medical education and biomedical research, welcomes Visiting International Medical Students (VIMS) from international medical schools to apply to take final-year clinical electives.

To find out if your medical school is on our approved list, contact our clerkship coordinator at VIMS@Brown.edu. Those holding an MD degree or who have graduated from a medical school are not eligible for this program. There are no exceptions.

If you are in your FINAL year of medical education, you may apply to take four-week clinical electives for a maximum of six (6) months. VIMS may not apply for core clerkships or sub-internships or certain other electives which are indicated on the Clinical Elective Catalogue. Scheduling is done on a space-available basis; there are no guarantees that an applicant will be scheduled. Students must apply through the Medical School's Clerkship Office. Students should NOT contact hospitals or course leaders directly; all scheduling is done through the Clerkship Office. Students should apply no earlier than six months before you hope to attend.

Elective dates are NOT flexible. There are no exceptions to this. The Elective Calendar is available.

Note: Electives for Visiting International Medical Students updated as of 8/27/14.

School Policies

AN APPLICATION MUST BE COMPLETE OR IT WILL BE RETURNED TO SENDER. DUE TO SHEAR VOLUME OF APPLICATIONS, WE CANNOT HOLD APPLICATIONS FOR SUPPLEMENTAL OR MISSING MATERIALS.

Be advised that visiting international medical students cannot ask for letters of recommendation from Brown faculty or hospital administrators, and cannot ask hospital staff or faculty to change electives.  Not adhering to these policies will be cause for dismissal from an elective.

Visiting International Medical Students are subject to the same rules and regulations that apply to Brown University students and Brown medical students. Violation of any school policy may result in immediate withdrawal from the program. School policies are outlined in Tenets of Community Behavior (part of the application), and the Brown Medical Student Affairs Handbook to which we encourage you to refer.

Please read all the information on the web site carefully and ALL the instructions, BEFORE applying to Alpert Medical School for clinical electives as a Visiting International Medical Student.
