About the Playwrights Workshop
Six Weeks of Immersive Theatre Study for High School Students
2014 Program Dates:
June 23 - August 2, 2014
For students completing 10th-11th grade by June 2014
The Playwrights Workshop invites engaged and aspiring playwright’s to join us for this 6-week residency, which follows the model set up at Brown’s famous graduate playwriting program. The program is designed specifically to create a supportive and stimulating environment for young writers to develop and share their writing. You will be amazed by how much you expand your horizons and skills as you attend classes, rehearsals and workshops that will strengthen your individual voice as a playwright and theater artist. In its second year, BTPRep’s Playwrights Workshop for high school students is already one of the best and most exciting playwriting programs for young writers who are discovering and embracing the creative complexities and profound emotional connections that writing for the stage invites. Writing and improvisation as well as reading and analyzing plays form the core of the curriculum. Additional electives may include puppetry, site specific work, solo performance and other theater genres.
Students can expect to spend the majority of their evening and weekend hours reading, writing, and rehearsing. Along with working with professional actors and university student mentors in Brown/Trinity Playwrights Rep, Playwrights Workshop students will collaborate with the TheatreBridge acting students. Students will also attend the three productions at Brown/Trinity Playwrights Rep and meet with the professional playwrights.
Brown/Trinity Playwrights Rep’s is a creative summer festival of new plays by professional playwrights and a summer home to professional directors, actors and designers as well as Brown University’s nationally esteemed theater students and faculty. Brown’s playwrights are known for writing some of the most exciting theater happening today (and winning Pulitzer and Tony awards as they forge their own artistic path).
Every summer we produce three new plays by this country’s most exciting emerging playwrights and hold classes in acting, directing, and playwriting. As a member of the Playwrights Workshop, you will have direct contact with Brown’s professional and student companies. Actors from the professional company will also perform students’ writing in staged readings at the end of the program.
