The Renaissance and Early Modern Studies Program (REMS) pursues an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Europe and the New World in the period loosely bounded by the dates 1350-1800 CE. Students select one discipline as a foundation of the concentration, and take courses in two other disciplines as well.
Broadly, we seek answers to these questions: what was “the Renaissance”—in naissance a rebirth? What makes the same period also “early modern”—the precursor of modernity? What styles of thought and social practices make this era distinctly different from, but also connect it with, the world we live in now?
