The Metcalf Institute at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography is teaming with Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR to improve communication skills for scientists state-wide through short professional developement programs. Throughout 2014 Metcalf Institute will work to strengthen scientists' communication skills on a more informal level at SciComm Exchange–collegial conversations with featured speakers about different topics in science communication over lunch at higher ed institutions around the state. Alan Lightman is an essayist, novelist, and physicist. This spring, he is a visiting Professor of English at Brown, teaching an advanced course on The Essay in the Nonfiction Writing Program. He is currently professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with dual faculty appointments in science and the humanities. (Distributed February 20, 2014)

Dr. Esther Choo and Dr. Megan Ranney will discuss more about their own unique paths to medicine.
