From the Military to College Hill: The Undergraduate Experience of United States Veterans at Brown

In 2009, student veteran Chaney Harrison, RUE ’11.5 developed a report entitled “Policy Recommendations for Veterans at Brown University.”  Review and discussion of the report with the Office of Institutional Diversity resulted in issues related to undergraduate student veterans being placed on the agenda of the Diversity Advisory Board and the creation of a subcommittee for the 2011-12 academic year.

The subcommittee discussed and developed recommendations in four areas of the undergraduate student veteran experience:  admission and recruitment, financial aid, academic and campus life support, and institutionalization.

The work of the subcommittee concluded with the submission of its recommendations to the Diversity Advisory Board in April 2012.  The Diversity Advisory Board endorsed the report.  The report was officially submitted to the Associate Provost for Academic Development and Diversity, the Dean of the College, and the Vice President for Campus Life and Student Services in October 2012.

Comments or questions may be directed to the Office of Student Veterans and Commissioning Programs and/or to Ricky Gresh, chair of the subcommittee.
