Course Description: We all know how important China has become. But do we know enough about the country’s past—its people, their customs and culture and experience—to know where China is coming from? This study group will survey the history of China from the end of the nineteenth century to the dawn of the twenty-first. It encompasses a century that witnessed several political revolutions, mind-boggling economic change, and heart-wrenching cultural transformation.

A somewhat autobiographical novel which gives a sense of the sweep of events surrounding the collapse of the traditional Chinese order and the establishment of the new. Wild Swans. Jung Chang. A memoir about three generations of Chinese women, beginning with the author’s grandmother. Also, short stories by Lu Xun, Lao She, and others.
