Generating the Goods: Writing on the Spot (ENGCS05-1a)

Course Description: Do you have great ideas for writing, but have trouble getting them down on paper? Have you hit a block in an existing work that needs some fresh ideas? This workshop will focus exclusively on creating new material through in-class exercises that encourage feelings of freedom and inspiration. Anyone who's encountered writer's block or wants to reinvigorate an existing writing practice will benefit from this inventive and supportive approach.

Instructor(s): Lauren Sarat

Instructor(s) Bio: As a veteran of the publishing industry, Lauren Sarat worked as an assistant editor at Picador USA/St. Martin's Press, and with the literary agency, Sobel Weber Associates. Prior to working in publishing, she was a bookseller in traditional stores like Three Lives & Co. in New York City, and also worked as a freelance features editor with barnesandnoble.com. Since leaving Manhattan in 2001, she has taught creative nonfiction and fiction workshops at Brown, and also taught creative writing at the University of Connecticut, Rhode Island College, and Rutgers University. Her short story, "Russian Lessons," was nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and "Tejas" was a finalist in the Raymond Carver Short Story Contest. Her fiction and poetry was published in Shenandoah, New York Stories, Anonymous, The Plum Creek Review, Turnstile, and Confrontation. Her nonfiction has appeared in apt, Tomyex.com, and Rhode Island Monthly. The radio literary journal, The Lumberyard, which has been featured on Connecticut Public Radio, aired her short works, "Matinee," "The Break-Up Flowers," and "Condiments and Other Sundries."
