Word Perfect: Being Your Own Best Editor (ENGCS06-1a)

Status: Open

Fee: $400.00

Timing: 10 sessions from October 8, 2009 - December 17, 2009 on Thursdays, 7-9PM no class 11/26

Course Description: Whether you’re writing an email to your supervisor or a letter to your senator, it is crucial to communicate your ideas in a clear, comprehensible, and audience-friendly manner.

A sound structure of rules (and their notable exceptions) will be reviewed, giving us the ability to articulate the reason behind “it just sounds right.” By examining “correct” vs. “incorrect” writing, you will have a firmer grasp on grammar, sharper revision skills, and a greater command of language. Though not a writing class, there will be short assignments, in-class exercises, and take-home editorial tests.

In addition to understanding how professional proofreaders and copyeditors approach their work, we will be reading handouts from The Only Grammar Book You’ll Ever Need; Copyediting: A Practical Guide; and Woe is I. We will also explore a handful of accessible online resources to assist you in increasing your speed, strength, and authority as a writer.

Note: Students are highly encouraged to bring in drafts of their own writing for review (e.g., job-related writing, cover letters, or creative work).
