Maidens, Mobsters and Monsters: Writing Genre (ENGCS10-1a)

Status: Closed

Fee: $320.00

Timing: 8 sessions from October 8, 2009 - December 3, 2009 on Thursdays, 7:00-9:00pm no class 11/26

Course Description: Mystery, Thriller, Romance, and Science Fiction. Genre is often dismissed by the writing establishment, but it is no less difficult to write than the Great American Novel. This course will focus on cultivating techniques of genre writing through close reading and writing exercises: creating air-tight plots, convincing dialogue, recognizable yet surprising characters, suspense, romantic tension, and bang-up endings. As a class we will discuss readings of genre masters: Philip K. Dick, Steven King, John Le Carre, and Jenny Crusie. In class exercises will help writers explore and develop techniques for their ‘writer’s toolbox,’ a set of skills and tricks they can call up on as they undertake longer genre projects outside of class.
