Course Description: What makes a piece of writing effective? Inspirational? Whether it's an editorial in a newspaper, a moving speech, or just an effective email, powerful prose shares a common foundation. This course will help students master the skills of influential communication not only through the written word but in verbal expressions. Writers will have an opportunity to experiment with different genres and techniques, while focusing on the kinds of communications most useful to their purposes. Readings will include a variety of works illustrating the art of eloquent writing and speech. Whether the purpose is to change minds, change policy, or change the world, this course will help will help those enrolled use language to persuade and captivate.
Instructor(s): Genoa Shepley
Instructor(s) Bio: Genoa Shepley is a writer and editor who has worked with a number of publishers and news outlets over the past twenty-five years. Her publications include an award-winning book about of the art of the American West and several articles. She has taught courses in writing and rhetoric at the University of Rhode Island and at the San Francisco Academy of Art University. She holds a BA in English from Pomona College, an MA degree in American History from the University of Arizona, and an MFA in fiction writing from Warren Wilson College.
