This Course is a Peer-Led Study Group more info»

Status: Open

Fee: $140.00

Timing: 10 sessions from October 8, 2009 - December 17, 2009 on Thursdays, 1:30pm - 3:30pm No class November 26

Course Description: Since the study group comprises the same cohort as the writers, we will contrast the experiences and thoughts of the class members and the male-oriented “face” of the novelists. This composite view of American society in the 1950s and the 1960s will examine the writing styles of the authors and will cover the Rosenberg execution, racism, drugs, the Vietnam War, and male/female conflict.

The group will be expected to read the novels (perhaps this summer) and participate in class discussions. Discussions will be prompted by focused questions presented by the coordinators and by class members. Short presentations (10 minutes) will be voluntary and evolve from reading.

Texts: The Book of Daniel (1967) by E.L. Doctorow (1931-) Rabbit Redux (1971) by John Updike (1932-2009) American Pastoral (1997) by Philip Roth (1933-)
