What People Wore: A History of Costume at the RISD Museum of Art (HARCS03-1a)

Course Description: This course examines costumes and textiles as depicted in works of art in the Museum's galleries---paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and 20th century apparel. We will discover how clothing reveals a wealth of information about the inward character, status, rank, power, and culture of the wearer. Social and economic conditions that contributed to changes in clothing design over the centuries will be discussed.

Class meets at the RISD Museum of Art, Chace Center lobby on North Main Street.

Instructor(s): Carole Villucci

Instructor(s) Bio: Carole A. Villucci is an adjunct faculty member at the Rhode Island School of Design and has taught in collaborative Brown/RISD American Civilization graduate courses. She was the Acting Head of Education at the RISD Museum from 2004 to 2006, and the Associate Curator of Education: Teacher, School and Docent Programs from 1994 to 2008 where she initiated many innovative education programs for teachers, schools, docents, RISD students and continuing education courses for adults. She received the Museum Educator of the Year Award from the National Art Education Association in 2006 and has a BFA from RISD, a MAT from Rhode Island College, and has received fellowships to study at the City College of New York and Bennington College in Vermont.
