Course Description: Sweden, admired by many as the epitome of the modern welfare state, evolved from the Viking era, when it was essentially a divided tribal enclave relying on piracy for survival. What made this transformation possible?
We will study the many stages of Sweden’s maturation following the Viking period (post 1084): unification under one king, the introduction of Christianity, development and stabilization of laws, administrative system, and language. Sweden went through a period as a great power, lost that power, saw the end of the absolute monarchy and the gradual development of democracy. Along the way Sweden has been influenced by many forces from within and without: among them the Industrial Revolution, capitalism, socialism, Marxism, climate changes, plagues, religious strife, two World Wars, emigration, and immigration.
