Course Description: This beginner course is designed to introduce students to conversational and written Modern Standard Arabic. Using a combination of textbook and audio lessons, as well as in-class conversations, the course gives the students a basic knowledge of how to understand, speak and read this language of 22 countries and over 300 million people. Students advance at a measurable pace in their language learning.

Instructor(s) Bio: Dr. Muhammad el-Sharkawi graduated from Ain Shams University in Cairo in 1993. He received his MA in teaching Arabic as a second language in 1997 from the American University in Cairo. After that, he moved to the Netherlands where he obtained his Ph.D. in Arabic linguistics. He has taught Arabic as a foreign language at universities in several countries. In addition to teaching Arabic as a foreign language, he also teaches translation and Arabic literature.
