Timing: 10 sessions from October 6, 2009 - December 8, 2009 on Tuesdays, 7:00-9:00pm

Course Description: This course will teach the standard Chinese language, Mandarin, at a basic level. All four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) will be taught, but the primary focus will be placed on conversation. You will learn approximately 100 simplified characters and how to read simple signs. Upon the completion of the course, you are expected to have a foundation in very basic Chinese grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, and be able to communicate with native speakers of Mandarin on everyday topics such as greetings, family, dining, shopping, etc. Pinyin, the official Romanization system, will be taught.

Instructor(s): Lung-Hua Hu

Instructor(s) Bio: Lung-Hua Hu, senior lecturer in the department of East Asian Studies, has been teaching at Brown University since 1999. She has taught all levels of Chinese, but in recent years she has been teaching mostly elementary and intermediate-level Chinese. In 2007, her Intermediate Chinese course was identified by the College Board as one of the top ten Chinese courses in the U.S. In addition to teaching Chinese, she also serves as study abroad advisor for China and Taiwan, and has taught at major summer programs such as Middlebury College, Princeton in Beijing, Duke Study in China, and Columbia University in Beijing.
