Life Long Learning

The Office of Continuing Education offers daytime and evening instructor-led courses for employees and the general population. The courses reflect Brown’s curriculum and cover a wide range of topics, including writing, literature, science, social sciences, and languages. The classes are typically taught by Brown faculty, graduate students, and staff.

Continuing Education supports BCLIR, a not-for-profit organization that offers peer-led courses, lectures, and social events.

BCLIR Logo

BCLIR is an independent, not-for-profit, peer-led organization that provides a diverse population of adults with varied opportunities for lifelong learning — courses, lectures, and cultural and social events.

Established in 1983 as the Brown Community for Learning in Retirement, BCLIR has followed the collaborative learning model for over two decades.  All classes are developed by peers and coordinated by peers.  The curriculum offers a broad spectrum of courses covering many academic areas. Participation through presentations is encouraged, but in many classes is not required.

In 2008, BCLIR became an independent organization with classes at multiple sites, but maintains a close relationship with Brown University Continuing Education.  Our name is now BCLIR, retaining the initials as our name, for this reflects our history.

All of our courses are accessible and affordable.

BCLIR members are active, intellectually curious adults from many career paths whose commonality is a love of learning.
