Special Student Program: How to Apply

Enrollment as a Special Student is approved on a semester-by-semester basis. Enrollment does not imply admission to candidacy for a degree. Students interested in admission as a graduate student should make inquiries either to the Graduate School or the Brown Medical School. No financial aid is available for Special Students.

Special Student Application Proceedure: New Students Only

The following materials should be submitted as part of your application for Special Student status at least one month prior to the start of the term:

  1. Special Student Application (with specific course number and title indicated)
  2. Official transcript(s) from the college/university from which you received your baccalaureate degree and from which you received any higher degrees, if applicable.
  3. Statement describing your interest in taking coursework at Brown University.
  4. Letter of recommendation from an individual who can testify to your academic interests and your level of commitment to those interests.
  5. A $75 application fee

Students will be notified of their status of their application in writing once the Admissions Committee has reviewed their materials.

Brown Employee Special Student Application Procedure

The following two applications must be submitted one month prior to the start of the term:

  1. Special Student Application
  2. An EEP Application wth course description attached.

It should be noted that permission to continue to enroll as an Employee Special Student is conditional upon maintaining an acceptable academic record. If you have any questions about this, please contact the Continuing Education.

Brown Postdoctoral Fellows Application Procedure

Postdoctoral fellows connected with Brown have a modified Special Student application process. A complete application consists of::

  1. Special Student Application. Please submit the application one month before the start of the semester.
  2. A letter from the fellow’s department stating that the person is a postdoctoral fellow and that all the fees associated with taking a class—application fee and tuition for the course— will be covered by the department, program, or grant.
  3. Please note: Brown-Affiliated Postdoctoral Fellows, Teaching Fellows, MDs, and PhDs in Biology and Medicine should apply through the Graduate School to be a Graduate Special Student: http://www.brown.edu/gradschool/apply. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in the Division of Biology and Medicine.

Returning Special Students

Returning Special Students must submit an application to indicate their interest in resuming study.
At least one month prior to the start of the term they should submit:

  1. Special Student Application (with specific course number and title indicated)
  2. A $75 application fee
