Program Admission

Applications are currently being accepted for the graduating class of 2017, beginning study August 2015.

There is no application deadline for this program. The selection committee meets regularly. Applications will be considered and admission will be granted until the program is full.

The EMHL graduating Class of 2016, beginning study August 2014, is no longer accepting new applications.

Admission Criteria

The Executive Master of Healthcare Leadership is designed for professionals who have significant responsibility in the healthcare industry; including those from health care delivery, drug and product manufacturing, healthcare consulting, health management systems, insurance, patient advocacy, public health, and policy and regulatory settings. The program seeks to identify a highly qualified and diverse student cohort. Candidates representing a broad range of experience in the healthcare industry are chosen for each cohort to ensure a rich peer-to-peer learning experience.

Applicants should demonstrate a record of organizational responsibility and professional achievement. Applicants’ records of academic achievement may include post-graduate degrees but there is no formal educational requirement beyond a bachelor’s degree.

Alumni Status

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be granted an Executive Master of Healthcare Leadership (EMHL) degree and Brown University Alumni status. For more information on alumni benefits, visit the Brown Alumni Association. 

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Credits

Graduates can apply for 25 CME credits directly through the American Medical Association. To claim credits applicants should apply to the AMA for a certificate indicating the AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM, which will be awarded upon completion of their degree. Team Attendance

Immediate and sustained benefits may be optimized by organizations that sponsor a team of participants. By developing a shared experience and vision in the program, an organizational team is poised to transfer this knowledge and to lead transformative change. Senior executives are encouraged to consult with the Program Director as they consider the advantages of sponsoring a team and plan the composition of their team. Each team member must complete an individual application and the team will be considered for admission when all applications are received.

To complete your application, submit the following via the online application system:

  1. Application form and fee
    Please complete and submit the online application. The application fee of $200 US can be paid by credit card via the online application, or by check to Brown University at Box T, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island 02912 USA.
  2. Personal statement
    Please prepare a statement that addresses why you want to pursue the Executive Master of Healthcare Leadership at Brown, what you hope to learn from the program, and how your participation will enrich the experience of others in the program. (approximately 500 words)
  3. Description of Critical Challenge
    This critical challenge will become the focus of your independent study “Critical Challenge Project” course throughout the 16-month program. In approximately 200 words, Describe a critical challenge related to healthcare, drawing from your own experience and vision for the future of the healthcare industry. Address the complexity and intractability of the problem in the current healthcare environment, and organizational barriers and constraints that surround it.   4. Resume or Curriculum Vitae
  5. Official transcript
    Please submit an official transcript for all programs, both undergraduate and graduate, for which you were awarded a degree. Please note that unofficial transcripts may be uploaded to the online application, but official transcripts are required for an application to be considered complete.
  6. Letters of recommendation (3)
    On the application, you will be asked for the names and email addresses of three professional colleagues who have agreed to provide a letter of recommendation for you. One letter should come from your present or past supervisor, or from a more senior executive in your organization.
  7. For team applications only: A letter from the sponsoring organization
    The sponsoring organization should prepare one letter that identifies all team members with their current roles and responsibilities, and the expected benefits of sending them as a team. On their individual applications, each team member should indicate that they are part of a team, and one team member should submit the letter from the sponsoring organization.

Please note that standardized test scores are not required.  However, you may submit scores as part of the online application.

The Selection Committee will review complete applications only. You will be notified by email about missing elements in your application, and you may login to monitor whether your file is complete.

Select candidates will be invited to interview.

Reserving your Place

Applicants who are accepted into the program must reserve their place with a non-refundable $1,500 deposit payable online by ACH or credit card, or by check to Brown University at Box T, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island 02912 USA. The deposit is due within 6 weeks of notification of acceptance and will be credited to program fee payment.
