Dr. Ruggieri is a practicing surgeon in the Northeastern US specializing in general, advanced minimally invasive and thyroid surgery. A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, he completed his surgical training at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine and served three years on active duty, the last as department of surgery chairman, in the United States Army.

Brazil’s Unified Health Care System: Transdisciplinary Collaboration and Integration of Health and Social Services

Dr. Pinto will provide an overview of Brazil’s Unified Health System and its Family Health Strategy and focus on the role of collaboration among community health workers, physicians and nurses. He will discuss associations between trans-disciplinary collaboration, evidence-based practice, primary care, public health and social services; and how these associations may facilitate integration of different services in Brazil and other global contexts.

This lecture is part of the Brown University Global Health Initiative Lecture Series and the Brazil Seminar, and is co-sponsored by Portuguese and Brazilian Studies.

Practicing Compassionate Creativity from Neonatal to Geriatric

Theatre Artist and Creativity Facilitator

Kali Quinn, theatre artist and compassionate creativity facilitator, creates a multi-media experience to explore empathy in the perceptions and practice of inter-generational care. Her talk, performance and multi-media presentation follows three generations of women from an infant at home in the 1950s to a present day nursing home, and conveys the grief and gifts that come through family secrets and aging.

This lecture-performance will give attendees the opportunity to connect to personal creativity, and to think about compassionate and innovative ways to increase understanding in the medical profession and in daily life.

The Creative Medicine Series, sponsored by the Cogut Center for the Humanities at Brown University, is free, open to the public and wheelchair accessible.

On January 24, 2014, Executive Master of Healthcare Leadership Program Director Angela Sherwin moderated a panel discussion at the Healthcare Financial Management Association – Rhode Island Chapter’s 2014 Conference, Avoid Fumbles and Red Flags: Your Revenue Cycle Game Plan for 2014.

The panel discussion, Legislative Insight to Reform, included legislative leaders responsible for implementing major changes brought to Rhode Island and Massachusetts through the ACA. The panel discussed state plans for Medicaid Expansion, update attendees on the MA Health Connector and RI HealthSource, and speak to the future of ACO’s, PCMH’s, and Population Health.

Based on her experience, Angela will provide an analysis of the first few weeks and what they indicate about the long-term implications of this program when executed on a large scale.
