Brown University, in partnership with the Monteverde Institute and the Area de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG), is excited to offer a unique international environmental leadership program in Costa Rica.
This 3-week pre-college program introduces students to the theory and practice of conservation and sustainability in Costa Rica. Students study and explore some of the most biodiverse regions in the world and meet with local leaders working to preserve these ecosystems and the human and non-human communities that live there.
Focus of study:
- Methods of tropical field ecology and conservation
- Marine biology and conservation in relation to fishing and coastal development
- The impacts of tourism and development on local culture
- Sustainable food production and consumption
- Leadership skills for sustainable communities
Students will enroll in BELL: Costa Rica (CRN: 10452)
Learning activities:
- Observe wildlife and explore a wide variety of tropical ecosystems
- Conduct field experiments in tropical dry forests
- Snorkel a shallow-water coral reef
- Experience life during a homestay with a local family
- Camp on a remote beach and hike through coastal habitats
- Explore your leadership style and the styles of others
- Develop your abilities to work effectively in a group to solve problems
- Create an Action Plan through an applied project to continue your learning when you return home
