> MML TECHNICAL INFO & FAQ
The Brown University Multimedia lab offers students access to the best equipment available for experimenting with the production of audio, video, and still images, and for authoring hypertext and multimedia projects. Our hardware and software are consistently evaluated in the face of industry trends, academic needs, and artistic exploration.

General
Both Grad Center and List :
2 GHz Intel Core Duo iMacs
2 x 2.66GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon Towers
All workstations are equipped with a CD-R/DVD-R burner. (Please note that these burners only accept DVD-R media.)

Audio
Hardware
8 iMac workstations in the Grad MMLab have audio capabilities. These seven workstations are equipped with Digidesign Mboxes and are connected to a central rack of components (via the Edirol UA-1A, selectable in the Sound Preference Pane) for playing source material from cassette tape, or DAT, or for recording output from the stations. The rack hardware consists of a TASCAM DA-20mkII 302 duel-well cassette deck, and an Alesis RA150 amplifier which powers a pair of Event Studio Precision 8 studio reference monitors. Several iMac workstations are equipped with MIDI controllers and the full suite of audio and MIDI software.

Students are responsible for their own headphones and adapters.

The multimedia classroom, which adjoins the lab, is meant to be the ideal arena for looking at and listening to original pieces. Its audio capabilities parallel those of the lab, with a Ashly LM308 Mixer, Tascam DA-20 MKII, a JVC MiniDV-VHS, ONKYO RI dual cassette deck, and an Alesis RA100 amplifier powering a Cambridge Soundworks speaker system.

Authoring
We define Authoring as broadly as possible to include hypertext writing, html/web-page production, and multimedia software design. Authoring is the production of electronic information spaces. That can mean an HTML web page or site, or a StorySpace hypertext. Authoring can include any of the activities described in the sections above, and may take advantage of any or all of the video, audio, and imaging tools available in the lab.
