Computing Clusters and Classrooms

CIS provides access to several types of software in the computing clusters. In addition to providing access to many of the same programs that are available on the Brown Web, the Computing Clusters provide a number of course-specific applications.

Software located in the Cluster is intended for Computing Cluster users and University classes that require course-related software. Most of these software packages are generally accessible; however, some packages are restricted and are intended for instructional purposes only. For information concerning restricted software, send email to itg@brown.edu.

Software changes

Software changes occur twice per year in the CIS Public Computing Clusters and Classrooms prior to the start of summer session and Spring semester. Solicitation for software change requests occur every March and September and are due by mid-April and mid-October. Only critical and security updates are made during the semesters. No other software changes are made outside of this schedule.

To submit a request:

  1. Faculty - contact the CIS Instructional Technology Group (ITG), itg@brown.edu
  2. All others - email Software_Services@brown.edu

Submitted software must pass licensing requirements. Additionally, we cannot guarantee the software will work on the CIS Public Computing Clusters' configuration. Please note that if the submitted software conflicts with the existing configuration, we will be unable to add it.

Reserving Software for Classroom Use

Depending on license availability, certain applications can be reserved for classroom use. You may submit your software reservation through an email request to Help@brown.edu two weeks prior to your class. Otherwise, you may ask your DCC to submit an HD Remedy ticket with your needs.

All requests for software reservations must include:

Requests will be evaluated individually and licenses will be reserved if enough are available.
