Printing to PAWPrints Color
Introduction
In addition to the PAWPrints (black and white) printers in the Public Computing Clusters, 3 color printers are also available in the CIT, Rockefeller and Science's Libraries. Anyone connected to Brown's network with a Brown Username and valid Brown ID can print to PAWPrintsColor printers. To do so will require:
- At your computer - a login with your username to the print queue. PAWPrintsColor requires the Dell 5110CN Postscript printer driver for proper operation. See installation and configuration section below.
- At the release station - a login and Brown ID card to select and release your job(s). Release stations are located next to the color printers
- At the card reader - a Brown ID with Bear Bucks credit to swipe and deduct the cost of each desired print.
A print job request will spool to the selected print release server and wait in the PAWPrintsColor queue until you login and release it. Then, your job will print on its corresponding printer for whichever release station you use. Note that any job held in the queue for more than 24 hours is automatically deleted.
This document covers the following functions:
- Printing in the clusters to PAWPrintsColor queues
- Printing from a residence hall or department to PAWPrintsColor queues:
Mac OSX | Windows XP
Before You Begin
You must have funds applied to your Brown Bear Bucks (formerly declining balance account) to use the PAWPrint color printers. To do so, visit a ValuePort machine with your Brown ID where you can add funds.
Printing in the Clusters to PAWPrintsColor queues
To print from a public cluster to Brown's color printers, follow the steps below:
1. Logon to a cluster computer using your Brown Username and password.
2. Open an application and select the color page(s) or photograph you wish to print.
3. Preview first to make sure the page is set up correctly for printing and you print only what you need.
4. Select the PAWPrintsColor queue to print the file. Be sure to select the PAWPrintsColor print queue. (Note: If you would like to print duplexed pages, see Duplex color printing using Windows XP or Duplex color printing with Mac OSX.) You may see a "spooling" message indicating the request is being sent to the release station.
5. Next, go to the color print release station at the CIT, Rockefeller or Sciences Library and login with your username and password, Swipe your Brown ID when prompted.
6. Select the print job(s) from the PAWPrintsColor queue that you wish to release to the printer.
7. From the list of pending print requests, click on one. The number of sheets, associated cost, and your remaining balance will be displayed for your review. Selecting your print job enables the "Print" and "Delete" buttons.
- Use the delete button to remove a selected job from the PAWPrintsColor queue.
- Select the jobs you wish to print and click on the Print button. A fee of $.65 per single-sided page and $1.00 per double-sided page will be deducted from your card.
Please note:
» You PawPrints or Bear Bucks balance must be sufficient to cover the cost of the selected job or it will not print.
» Take care when deleting. You will not be offered a confirmation step. Once deleted, it is permanently removed.
» Black and white print jobs sent to the PAWPrintsColor queue will be charged at the same rate as color.
» Verify that the number of copies you selected is correct. You will be charged for all the pages that you sent to the PAWPrintsColor printer.
8. Go directly to the printer to collect your output, as it will not have a banner page. Note that any job held in the queue for more than 24 hours is automatically deleted.
Notes on color printing:
- By default, the color printers will print single-sided pages. Be sure to change the print settings when previewing your document if you prefer to print duplexed pages.
- Printing multiple copies is permitted.
Duplex color printing with Mac OSX:
Single-sided printing is the default printer setting, since duplex color printing is not generally the intended result. To print on both sides of the page:
- Open the color document or photograph you wish to print.
- Select Print from the File menu. (Note: Be sure to select the PAWPrintsColor print queue.)
- Click on the Presets drop-down list and select color duplex.

Duplex printing will be your default print setting for that particular document next time you choose to print it. Remember to select the Color Single Sided preset from the Presets drop-down list when you want to print single-sided pages.
Printing from a Residence Hall or Department to PAWPrintsColor queues
After configuring the PAWPrintsColor queue on your computer, the steps to release your print job will be the same as those described above. You can go to either color print release station to release your print job. You will need to bring your Brown ID with credit to swipe at the adjacent card reader.
NOTE: A print job will sit in the PAWPrintsColor queue for twenty-four (24) hours once the job has been submitted. If you do not retrieve it within that time period, the job will be automatically deleted from the queue.
