Attention

Starting on Tuesday, August 18, the basic Brown internet connection available over wireless will become "Brown_EZ". This change is intended to let the community know that this network is intended for simple connections and basic browsing of web pages.

You will notice that "Brown_EZ" has replaced "Brown" on your available wireless networks list. You will connect to "Brown_EZ" in the same way as you connected to "Brown" before, only the name has changed.

For users of the preferred "Brown-Secure" network, you do not need to do anything at this time.

CIS is continuing to make upgrades to our wireless network - more information will be provided to the community later this fall about upcoming changes.

Please note that CIS' documentation for regarding the naming of the Brown_EZ network will be updated on Monday August 17.

Wireless - Brown_EZ versus Brown-Secure Wireless Network

Introduction

With the expansion of wireless access on campus, we have two different wireless networks available for users. One network is named Brown_EZ and the other is called Brown-Secure.

The two networks have a complete overlap in coverage, but offer different types of services.  CIS strongly recommends using "Brown-Secure", as it provides for a better user experience and a higher level of security and protection of your data.  "Brown_EZ" is appropriate for basic web browsing, and items such as handheld devices which cannot connect to Brown-Secure.

Mac users have native support for Brown-Secure right in their operating system, and Windows users can download a helper application to connect to the service.  Follow the link in the section below for instructions for your operating system.

For more information on wireless, including a list of covered areas, at Brown please see our Wireless FAQ.

Brown-Secure

While on the Brown-Secure wireless network, you can use all internet services on an encrypted network.  You can use all applications offered for download on the Software Distribution website, all email clients and printing services.  Additionally, you will be able to access Library e-resources on the Brown-Secure wireless network. To use any application, you must first configure your wireless network card for the Brown-Secure wireless network.
