Safety Tip: Lock It Down; Keep It Clean
Throughout this issue, we warn you about the importance of safety online, but you also need to protect your computers and personal effects from physical threats as well.
For example, many of you who are switching from the traditional desktop machine to a laptop. While the additional portability comes in very handy - especially in our wireless environment! - that same "portability" introduces new risks. Here are a couple of tips to protect your computer:
- If you have a laptop, use a cable. This deters thieves from the opportunity of a quick theft. It is much easier for someone in the area to grab and run than it is to cut a cable, then grab and run.
- If you use a laptop in a cubicle, you should lock it up in a cabinet or desk drawer at night and over the weekend. Don't leave it in the docking station on your desk.
Some other good tips:
- Practice the "clean desk" rule - making sure that reports, media, etc. with sensitive data are locked up before you leave.
- Use shredders to get rid of sensitive printed material.
- If you use the card-access system for access to where you work or live, please be cautious of others who may follow you in. Don't allow piggy-backing. If you don't know the person coming through the door behind you, ask to see their Brown ID.
Do your part to keep Brown a safe and secure environment for all of us.
