Slight Revision to Password Policy at Brown

Posted on March 20, 2006 09:17 AM

We have modified the Password Policy slightly to discourage the use of desktop "password lists". Saving your passwords in your Web browser's saved password list (or anyplace else on your desktop) can expose the data it protects to anyone else who uses your computer, and possibly to others on the Internet.

The policy change can be reviewed at http://www.brown.edu/cis/policy/password.html, which is linked from http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/CIS/policy/.

Please see the change in section 3.0:

3. All passwords are to be treated as sensitive, confidential information and should therefore never be written down or stored on-line unless adequately secured. Note: Do not use the password storage feature offered on Windows or other operating systems. This feature creates a password file that is vulnerable to hackers.
4. Passwords should not be inserted into email messages or other forms of electronic communication without the consent of IT Security.

Any questions can be directed to ITSecurity@Brown.edu.

Underground Rhode Island: Lost and Unknown Stories

Posted on March 20, 2006 08:58 AM

Underground Rhode Island: Lost and Unknown Stories is an exploration of arts and culture in Rhode Island from a perspective that deviates from the mainstream. Each year, Professor Paul Buhle (American
Civilization) tasks his students with creating oral histories of notable Rhode Islanders, capturing in the subject's own words his or her perspectives and life experiences. While most students focus on the arts -- interviewing musicians, painters, and playwrights -- the collection also includes champions of Deaf culture, socially-aware attorneys, and other notable locals.

This was STG's first project-level collaboration with the Brown University Library's Center for Digital Initiatives (CDI). Patrick Yott and Anne Caldwell in CDI worked closely with STG's Kerri Hicks to integrate the library's cataloging knowledge and storage-and- retrieval resources with STG's expertise in information architecture, data analysis, programming, and interface design. Several students also contributed research and design efforts to the project, including Erik Resly '08, one of STG's student employees.

You will find audio interviews, transcripts, and photograps of some of Rhode Island's most famous and infamous residents, including Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads, journalist Rudy Cheeks, actors Bob Colonna and Peter Gerety, AS220 founder Bert Crenca, and dozens of others.
