The 5th-Year Bachelor-Master's Program in Elementary Education
| Back to Teacher Education Programs || MAT Application and General MAT Information |
Working jointly with The Wheeler School and collaborating partners, Providence Public Schools, Smithfield Public Schools, and Community Preparatory School, the Education Department offers the 5th-Year Bachelor-Master's (B-MAT) degree program. This model allows you to graduate with your BA or BS and earn your MAT the following year. This program leads to certification in elementary education (grades 1-6).
The program has three phases. The first corresponds with the participant's undergraduate years at Brown. During this time students complete academic studies in their chosen concentration. In addition, or as part of the concentration, other courses must also be taken: one in child development and another in multicultural perspectives in education. Along with these two pre-requisite courses, at least one Education elective course is required. ED90-Fieldwork Seminar is not required, but is recommended. Up to two undergraduate courses may count towards the MAT part of the overall requirements, (an Education elective course and ED213-Issues & Trends in Education).
The second phase occurs during the summer after graduation. A summer practicum that focuses on teacher preparation and practice is conducted at Community Preparatory School in conjunction with its summer program, SummerPrep.
During the final phase (the fifth year), participants will take the remaining courses to fulfill state certification requirements. A practicum and classroom observation will be scheduled in the fall semester, student teaching in the spring semester. These experiences give the student many opportunities to make observations, test skills, and integrate them with the theoretical knowledge they are learning. Required coursework will be scheduled during both semesters.
