Academics & Research
You come to graduate school to learn new concepts, develop new skills, and expand your knowledge. You also come to prepare yourself to contribute to your field and to advance professionally.
While you are developing expertise at Brown, you will enjoy mentoring and being a mentor.
At Brown, we put the emphasis on collaboration, not competition. So students come away with an array of colleagues — both peer and faculty —and the experience of constructive engagement. As one student put it, you are not alone at Brown.
This section provides essential information on the graduate-training environment at Brown. Training is centered in the program, though interdisciplinary inquiry is encouraged. The director of graduate study and faculty mentors are important guides for students. Other offices provide resources to further your research, teaching, and other professional development.
The Graduate School deans and staff are available to assist graduate students and post-doctoral appointees. The associate dean for academic affairs is the primary contact at the Graduate School for academic matters. Students and post-docs may also visit the dean of the Graduate School during weekly office hours.
