Oscar-nominated, Indian-American film director Mira Nair will visit Brown on April 11th to present a pre-release screening of her latest film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist. The film, which stars Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland and Liev Schreiber, tells the story of a young Pakistani man educated at Princeton who, following the September 11th attacks, must negotiate the set of values he has internalized in the United States with his cultural and religious heritage.

The Brown-India Initiative Spring 2013 Seminar Series presents Ananya Vajpeyi, Associate Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies. Vajpeyi will deliver a lecture titled “B.R Ambedkar: Reshaping the Political Imagination in Modern India.” Please join us on Friday, April 5, from 2:30-4:30 PM in the Joukowsky Forum at the Watson Institute for International Studies.

Professor Ashutosh Varshney contributes again to the ongoing debate about India’s evolving democratic politics in an Op Ed for the March 20 Indian Express. This latest installment in an exciting exchange of ideas about identity, inclusion, and nationhood is available now in the Indian Express epaper edition.

The Brown-India Initiative Spring 2013 Seminar Series presents Gyanendra Pandey, Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor of History, Emory University. Professor Pandey will deliver a lecture titled “Modern Prejudice: ‘Vernacular’ and ‘Universal.’” Please join us on Friday, March 15, from 2:30-4:30 PM in Pembroke Hall, Room 305.

Ruby Lal, associate professor of Middle Eastern and South Asian studies at Emory University, will present her lecture "Coming of Age in Nineteenth-Century India: The Girl-Child and the Art of Playfulness" as part of the Brown-India Initiative Seminar series. Author of Domesticity and Power in the Early Mughal World, Lal is an expert on women and gender relations in Islamic societies in the precolonial and colonial world. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a discussion and reception. The next lecture of the Brown-India Initiative Spring 2013 Seminar Series will be delivered by Gabrielle Kruks-Wisner of the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies. Please join us on Friday, March 8, from 2:30-4:30 PM in the Joukowsky Forum at the Watson Institute for International Studies for Kruks-Wisner’s talk titled “Citizen Claim-Making Strategies in Rural Rajasthan: Who Makes Demands for Public Services and How?”

Brown-India Initiative spoke with Mike Johnson '13 about his thesis research on land acquisition in Noida, India, as well as his focus on contemporary India in his undergraduate studies.
