Brown University offers the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) online training courses to all who conduct research using human participants. Certification in the Brown University Education Program in the Protection of Human Research Participants is required prior to conducting human research at Brown. Recertification is required every three(3) years.
All Brown University human research studies must be reviewed and approved by the Brown University Institutional Review Board (IRB) prior to initiation and must be conducted in full compliance with federal regulations and University human research policies and procedures.
Which Group Should I Choose?
- Group 1 – Brown University Research Community
- Group 2 – Brown University Research Community members who have completed a human research protections program within the last three years at a Brown University affiliated hospital (Bradley, Butler, Memorial, Miriam, Rhode Island, and Women & Infants Hospitals). Individuals must provide the Brown University Research Protections Office with a copy of their hospital program certification. Please send your hospital program certification to: IRB Coordinator, Box 1986, Brown University or email HRPO@Brown.edu.
- Group 3 – Brown University Research Community members who have completed a CITI human research protections program within the last three years at another institution. Individuals must provide the Brown University Research Protections Office with a copy of their current institutional certification. Please send your certification to: IRB Coordinator, Box 1986, Brown University or email HRPO@Brown.edu.
Who is required to have human research protections training?
As of April, 2005, all research personnel involved in human research projects, all IRB Members, and all IRB staff are required to complete this educational program. Research personnel include principal investigators, co-investigators, faculty advisors for student investigators, research assistants, and any research team member who will come in contact with research participants and/or their research data and identifiers.
When do I need to complete this training?
Investigators must complete this training prior to protocol approval. Other research personnel must complete this training prior to beginning work on the project.
We strongly suggest that the CITI training be completed early in the process of writing a protocol, as it is extremely helpful in preparing a complete protocol with sufficient detail for a substantive IRB review.
What score is considered passing?
The passing score required is at least 80%. The score will be based on the overall score from all of the required modules.
What am I required to complete?
Before engaging in a human research project, all Brown University investigators (including faculty, staff, and students) are required to take the modules listed in the appropriate Group selection.
Although not required, please consider completing other modules that may be of value to you in your specific area of research.
The final module consists of the Brown University Institutional Page where you will be asked to certify that you have read the following in order to successfully complete the program:
- Brown University Policies and Procedures for the Protection of Human Participants in Research
- Brown University Policies and Procedures Relating to Research Privacy
- The Belmont Report
How long will it take to complete the program?
Completion of all the required modules should take approximately 4-6 hours. The course does not have to be completed in one sitting.
How do I obtain certification?
When you have completed the required training, return to the Course Content page, scroll to the bottom and click on “Go to Your Institutional Page.” Click on “B” and select Brown University. Select “Continue” and then select “Complete to Submit a Course Completion Form.” Scroll down the page and complete the “Confirmation of Course Completion” form. Print out the page and click on the submit button.
What are the continuing education/recertification requirements?
Brown University requires recertification every three(3) years. The CITI Refresher Course will satisfy the recertification requirement. If you have already been certified in the Brown University program through the use of the Protecting Study Volunteers in Research text, recertification will be necessary three(3) years from the date of your previous certification. At that time individuals may choose to complete either the CITI basic program or the CITI refresher course in order to be recertified. If you are unsure when your certification is due to expire, please contact the IRB Coordinator at (401) 863-3050 or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Is there HIPAA at Brown?
What do I do to receive CME Credits?
In order to receive 6 CME credits, you will need to complete the Biomedical Quizzes 1 through 12. Quiz 13 is optional. A score of 80% on the test is required to obtain credit. Your test results will be collected by the Web Page. Once you have completed the modules, there will be a link to download a CME Credit request form. You will need to complete this form and mail it to the address on the form with a $60.00 fee. The complete instructions are on the form. For credit card payments you can fax the completed form to (305) 243-5613.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
