David A. Savitz is Vice President for Research at Brown University. He is a senior member of the University's academic administration and the primary advocate for research. He is responsible for the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), which facilitates grant applications, manages research support and reporting, provides a variety of seed grants, and coordinates intellectual property efforts, including patents, licensing, and business start-ups. He is a member of the President’s cabinet.
He is co-chair, along with the research vice president from the University of Rhode Island, of the Rhode Island Science and Technology Advisory Council, which assists state leadership in developing programs and policies to build the state’s research and development capacity and to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship.
His office also provides intellectual property management and commercialization services for Lifespan and Care New England.
