The Superfund Research Program studies the health hazards of emerging contaminants including metallic nanoparticles and carbon nanomaterials.
As a center of technical excellence, the Superfund Research Program at Brown University is a research oriented, multidisciplinary approach to resolving the complex health, engineering, and community challenges of contaminated environments to benefit Rhode Island's communities and citizens.
The Program studies is conducting research in a variety of areas, including how exposure to chemicals may alter the human reproductive system, understanding the flow of contaminated vapors from the soil and groundwater into homes, schools and workplaces, and discovering ways to remove trace heavy metals from water.
They also help advocate and educate local residents on the risks associated with contaminated areas and help homeowners obtain funding to clean up superfund sites on their property.
The Superfund Research Program works closely with the Rhode Island Departments of Health and Environmental Protection, as well as the EPA.
