Who can use the Brown Design Workshop?

Anyone at Brown and RISD! Membership and monitorship are open to all Brown and RISD student, faculty, and staff.

What equipment do you have?

Here is a list of some of the equipment we have, though it is by no means exhaustive: 3D printers (Makerbots 2, 2X), laser cutter, electronic tools, soldering irons, oscilloscopes, power supplies, measuring equipment, hand tools, mills, lathes, drill presses, horizontal and vertical bandsaws, vinyl cutter, etc.

When is the BDW open?

Open hours are Monday-Friday from 9am-12pm, 2-5pm, and 7-11pm, and Sunday from 12-6pm. Monitor Hours are Weekdays 7-11pm and Sunday 12-6pm. The general space is open to all during open hours; however, the Digital Fabrication Shop is available to monitors 24/7 but open to members only during monitor hours.
Note: monitors must abide by all safety rules, especially the one prohibiting working alone.

What is the Digital Fabrication Shop?

It’s the room within the BDW that houses the laser cutter and 3D printers. It’s accessible during monitor hours for all and by card swipe access by monitors around the clock.

Can I get access to the Student Machine Shop (Jepis)?

Access to the Student Shop (mill, lathe) is limited to those who have completed the course Mechanical Technology II.

Can I check out equipment?

Yes! Some of the tools and kits are available for borrowing. Fill out the BDW Equipment Loan Request to set the process in motion. Then, check equipment out with a monitor or staff.

Can I reserve the space for an event or workshop?

Yes—just fill out this form and check the calendar to ensure there are no conflicting events for the time requested.

Where is the BDW?

The Design Workshop is located within Prince Lab off Barus and Holly, which is located just east of Brook Street between Waterman and George. See this map for more detailed directions.
