Continuing Education: Teaching Opportunities

Teach for SCS

Brown University Office of Continuing Education offers programs to a wide variety of audiences regionally, nationally and internationally. Participants include pre-college students, undergraduates and graduate students from Brown and other institutions of higher education, as well as returning adult students.

New faculty and graduate students find that teaching for CE is an opportunity to develop their teaching skills with different audiences while more senior faculty can develop and test new courses. Emeriti faculty can continue to extend their reach to different audiences.

Teaching Opportunities

The Office of Continuing Education welcomes the submission of course proposals for the Spring and Summer 2010 terms. Faculty, graduate students, adjuncts, and instructional staff are invited to submit course proposals for day, evening, and weekend, non-credit courses, lectures, and seminars for adults for Spring 2010. We also invite proposals for the non-credit, pre-college program and the credit-bearing Summer Session, for Summer 2010.

Providing Support to Students

Instructor’s Role: Instructors play prominent roles in the daily lives of students—as teachers, mentors, and advisors. Instructors are often the first to notice when a student may be experiencing academic or emotional difficulties. While each case will be unique, the following resources are available to support instructors during the summer.

Emergencies: For a concern about immediate harm, threat or medical assistance, call the Brown Department of Public Safety (401) 863-4111. Brown University emergency service (Police, Medical, and Fire) is available 24 hours a day to students and their families by phoning (401) 863-4111 (emergencies), (401) 863-3322 (routine business).

Emergency Phones: There are 140 emergency phones, also known as “blue light phones,” on buildings or in green areas on campus and 58 in elevators. Look for yellow call boxes and/or blue overhead lights to identify these phones.

Administrator On-Call System: There is an Administrator on Call (AOC) after business hours (nights and weekends) to support anyone who is affiliated with Brown.  To speak with the AOC, call the Department of Public Safety at (401) 863-3322 and ask to them to page the AOC.

If a student is absent from class one day, the instructor should follow-up with the student by email or in class the next day. Instructors should use their discretion about whether the student needs to complete extra work to make up for an absence or has not met the requirements of the course to receive a certificate.
