Qualifications

The successful applicant will be a rising sophomore, junior or senior undergraduate student currently enrolled at Brown University. We seek candidates with a demonstrated interest in providing a safe and positive check-in and orientation experience for pre-college age students enrolled in Summer@Brown programs.

Requirements

A criminal background check is required of finalists for this position. Candidates will not be permitted to begin work in this position until completion of a criminal background check deemed satisfactory to Brown.

Orientation Assistants must be available to start on June 7 and work though August 8, 2009. You must be willing and able to work weekends. Every effort is made to arrange for RAs to take at least two weekends off. You must be available to participate in staff training on Sunday, June 7 and evenings during the week of June 7 - 13.

Job Description

Under the direction of a Residence Director, Orientation Assistants are responsible for promoting the safety and well-bring of pre-college students (age 14 - 17) who arrive early or depart late on weekends. OA's are required to:

  • Attend staff training on Sunday, June 7 and during the evenings June 7 - 13
  • Attend a weekly staff meeting one evening each week June 15 - August 8
  • Assist with check-in, check-out & orientation on June 13-14, 20-21, 27-28, July 11-12, 18-19, 25-26, August 1-2, 7-8
  • Greet pre-college students who arrive early on Saturdays and escort them to their assigned residence hall
  • Welcome pre-college students and their families when they check-in on Sundays
  • Supervise pre-college students overnight in a residence hall designated for early arrivals, late arrivals and late departures
  • Supervise students overnight on the following Fridays: July 10, 24 and August 7
  • Abide by and enforce summer program rules, and report unsafe and inappropriate behavior
  • Carry a University issued cell phone and participate in on-duty rotation shifts on some weekends
  • Lead pre-college students who arrive late on Sundays through an abbreviated orientation
  • Escort pre-college students who arrive late on Sundays to the Office of Residential Life on Monday mornings
  • Assist with various check-in & orientation duties on Saturdays and Sundays

Compensation

Orientation Assistants receive a single room in a residence hall from June 7 - August 8, 2009. This position does not include a meal plan.

You will receive a one time stipend of $100 for mandatory participation in training that takes place after 4pm on Sunday, June 7 and after 6pm in the evenings during the week of June 7 - 13. You are expected to make arrangements to ensure that other employment does not conflict with training sessions in the evenings or with your orientation duties on weekends.
