Summer@Brown: Housing and Meals

Pre-College Programs at Brown University – Summer 2009

Various Programs

Housing

Each student room provides typical college furniture. Telephone service is available in all rooms, but you must bring your own telephone and answering machine. The most reliable and easiest way to make long distance calls is with a pre-paid calling card sold at the Brown Bookstore. Many students find that cell phones are a more convenient alternative.

There are laundry facilities in the basements of all residence halls. Students may use their Brown I.D. card to operate laundry and vending machines. You can add money to your Brown I.D. card in any Card Value Center (CVC) machine located on campus.

A team of carefully selected and trained Residence Directors (RDs) and Resident Advisors (RAs) live in the residence halls. These skilled and caring adult professionals and Brown undergraduates are on hand to assist you in navigating the transition from home to college life. The residential staff will help you balance the competing demands of academics and socializing and enforce policies when necessary. The staff will be your resource for everything from finding the nearest restaurant to guiding you through the academic resource and support system.

Students are randomly assigned to single, double, triple occupancy rooms or single-sex suites in various residence halls on campus. Please notify us if you have a request for special housing accommodations by filling out the Disability and Medical Accommodation Form and please provide a maximum amount of notice.

In the interest of making our summer campus experience a diverse and exciting one, students are randomly assigned a roommate so that they can build friendships with new people. Unfortunately, we are unable to honor roommate requests.

Meals and Snacks

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in one of Brown’s dining halls on weekdays. Brunch and dinner are served on weekends. You may invite guests to enjoy a meal with you on a cash basis. Thayer Street offers numerous shops and restaurants, as well.  If you have significant food allergies, please complete the Medical and Disability Accommodations form.

Food Allergies

Brown Dining Services take food allergies very seriously, and will accommodate special needs whenever possible. If you have significant food allergies, please disclose these on your medical form and complete a Disability and Medical  Accommodation Form.  Please contact the Nutritionist at Brown Dining Services to discuss any specifics by emailing foodallergies@brown.edu.  A copy of the menu and all ingredients used is available at the dining hall each day.
