Intensive English Language Program (IEP)
Intensive English Language in the Globalized World - Summer 2009
Brown University’s Intensive English Language Program (IEP) is a 4-week program for high-achieving, university-bound students who do not speak English as their native language.
This 4-week program combines intensive English language study with liberal arts courses which explore the American experience and global topics. This combined approach delivers language learning in the context of global culture.
Students gain the tools to transition between cultures and the communication skills to function in English language situations.
Mornings are dedicated to intensive English language study conducted in groups with other non-native English speakers. Course time is divided into three areas:
- Academic writing
- Speaking & pronunciation
- Integrated skills
In the afternoons, IEP students join other Summer@Brown pre-college students in courses focused on a global or American studies topic. During the 4-week program, IEP students choose two different 2-week afternoon courses (see Program Details for more information).
Students may also choose to enroll (at no additional cost) in the internet-based TOEFL Preparation course (iBT TOEFL). This course meets four afternoons a week for four weeks from 4pm-5pm.

Eligibility
This program is for high-intermediate and advanced level English language learners who have at least two years of prior experience studying English. The Intensive English Language Program (IEP) is an academically rigorous program. No TOEFL score is required as part of the application.
Life Outside the Classroom
The IEP immerses students in English language and American academic life both inside and outside of the classroom. Students live in Brown University residence halls and take their meals in campus dining halls with other pre-college students from America and around the world. While at Brown, students participate in the activities and events of the Summer@Brown Pre-College program.
