Program and Travel Information

Program Itinerary

1. Travel Dates and Times

March 30- April 6, 2012
March 30 – Arrive in Hilo between 4:00pm and 6:00pm
April 6 – Depart Kona between 12 noon and 4:00pm

2. How to Book Tickets with Different Arrival and Departure Locations
You can book your flight using almost any of the popular travel booking websites, such as Kayak, Travelocity, Expedia or Orbitz. When booking on-line, look for a link that says "Multi-destination" or "Multi-City". You may also go through your preferred airline’s travel website or your local travel agent.

Airport codes: Hilo (ITO) and Kona (KOA)

3. Coordinating travel with other students
We have created a student group on Facebook to create a forum for students and parents to connect directly with each other to arrange travel to the Big Island together. To access, the student must be a Facebook member. Search for the group name (Brown Environmental Leadership in Hawaii 2012) and request to join. This is a closed group accessible only for students attending the program in Hawaii. Members must be approved by the group administrator.

4. Student Pick-up and Drop-off
Brown staff will meet you at the Hilo airport for transfer to Volcanoes National Park. Look for people wearing Summer@Brown t-shirts in the arrival hall.

At the end of the program, you will be transferred to Kona and escorted through the airport until you reach the security gates.

5. If your flight is delayed.
If you experience a delay while traveling, call Lexi Weintraub at (401) 489-2643 or the Kohala Center at (808) 443-2755 with your new flight arrival time. Explain that you are with the Brown Environmental Leadership group - we will arrange to meet you at Hilo airport and transfer you to Volcanoes National Park.

6. Send us your travel itinerary and cell phone number.
Once you’ve booked your tickets, it’s important to submit your travel itinerary to our office along with your other forms and your cell phone number. Your itinerary and cell phone number will help us track your incoming flight into Hilo and allow us to contact you when you arrive at the airport.

Information for Students

Your Fellow Students
There are approximately 30 students in the session. Usually there are slightly more girls than boys. Students come from all over the U.S. and the world, and range from grades 9 – 12.

Homework
There is no homework in the traditional sense. For the most part, students do short activities together and keep journals to take home.

Spending Money
All your food and housing is covered in the program fee, so you will only need money for your travel to and from the island, and for souvenirs if you choose. The main shopping opportunity for students is the KMC store, which has postcards, souvenirs, snacks and toiletries.

Laundry Facilities
There are coin-operated washers and dryers at KMC. There are no laundry facilities at Kawaihae.

What happens if I get sick?
This depends on the nature of your illness. In an emergency you will be transported to the hospital in Hilo or Kona. We will always be within a 1.5 hour drive from a hospital. For minor problems we have a well-equipped first aid kit and a staff certified in first aid.

Contacting Students in Hawaii
Cell phone coverage is limited, and there is no electricity for charging phones at Kawaihae. Students must restrict their calling to free time in the evenings.
There is limited computer access for a fee at KMC
