Summer in Bologna Program Details

Overview

Immerse yourself in the Italian language while absorbing Italian history and culture in Bologna, one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy. This intensive language course provides an opportunity for undergraduates to study at the oldest university in Europe. The Università di Bologna can claim to be the oldest continuing institution of higher learning in Europe and possibly the world. Among its alumni are Thomas Aquinas and some of Italy's most famous writers such as Dante and Petrarch. The city provides a welcoming and exciting extended classroom, with its wealth of monuments and museums, vibrant nightlife and renowned cuisine. Largely free of mass tourism, Bologna retains much of the flavor of its Roman and medieval past.

Housing

In Bologna, students live in Brown-rented apartments with fellow students from the program. Apartments are fully furnished and are located in beautiful and convenient areas of town. The grouping of students per apartment is determined by a housing lottery. Each student will have his/her own room in a shared space with 2-5 other students. There is a common kitchen area; students mainly cook for themselves or eat out at the numerous local restaurants. Bologna is famed for its cuisine and many wonderful opportunities exist to explore this aspect of Italian and Bolognese culture. We cannot arrange for housing arrangements prior to or after the program dates.

Study Abroad Refund Policy For Credit Bearing Programs

If a student withdraws from a study abroad program during the first 3 weeks of the program, she/he is eligible for a refund of the Brown payments based on the schedule below. Brown is not responsible for indirect costs paid directly by the student, including, but not limited to, passport fees, vaccinations, and transportation costs, even when these expenses are directly related to program participation. The schedule below excludes the $300.00 program deposit paid at the time of initial enrollment (typically February of the program year).

Prior to program start, students will receive a full refund less $300 deposit. Students withdrawing before the end of the first week of the program will receive a 75% refund less the $300 deposit. Students withdrawing before the end of the second week will receive a 50% refund less the $300 deposit. Students withdrawing before the end of the third week will receive a 25% refund less the $300 deposit. No refunds will be issued after the end of the third week.

For students who leave because of a medical or family emergency, the same refund policy applies. A student who is suspended, dismissed, or withdraws while under investigation for misconduct, will not have program payments refunded.
