Russian Language & Literature, Art, and Culture in St. Petersburg
Study Abroad: St. Petersburg is a Summer Program designed for American students seeking an immersion experience in Russian language and culture. Students receive 90 hours instruction in Russian language from experienced Russian faculty and 42 hours instruction in art, architecture, literature, and culture of St. Petersburg from Brown faculty.
The program is hosted by St. Petersburg’s Nevsky Institute and will be supervised by two Brown faculty members: Lynne Debenedette and Alexander Levitsky.
Students enroll in one language and one culture course while in St. Petersburg. Students may choose between Elementary, Intermediate or Advanced Intensive Russian language, depending on the student's prior experience. Students will also take "A Window on Russia", focused on the art and culture of St. Petersburg. "A Window on Russia" will be taught in English. You will have ample free time in the evenings to immerse yourself in the local culture and interact with the local people.
Prior Language Requirement:
No prior proficiency in Russian language is required.
Passport/Visa Requirement:
Both a passport (valid for eighteen months beyond the END of the summer program) and a student visa are required for travel to Russia. Please note that your passport must be valid at least for 1 ½ years after the end date of the program AND must have at least two blank pages available for your visa. Your student visa will only be valid for the exact dates of the program, therefore your travel itinerary cannot deviate from the program dates (arrive in Russia on June 7 and depart Russia on July 25).
