Summer in St. Petersburg Program Details

Images of St. Petersburg

Study Abroad: St. Petersburg is a Summer Program designed for students seeking an immersion experience in Russian language and culture. Students receive 90 hours instruction in Russian language from experienced Russian faculty and 42 hours instruction in art, architecture, literature, and culture of St. Petersburg from Brown faculty. The program is hosted by St. Petersburg’s Nevsky Institute and will be supervised by two Brown faculty members.

Students enroll in one language and one culture course while in St. Petersburg. Students may choose between Elementary, Intermediate or Advanced Intensive Russian language, depending on the student's prior experience. Students will also take "St. Petersburg: A Window on Russia", focused on the art and culture of St. Petersburg. "A Window on Russia" will be taught in English. Class lectures are complemented with trips to local museums and places of historic interest. And there is ample free time in the evenings to immerse yourself and interact with the local culture and people.

Housing

The program features homestays with Russian families. Living with a Russian family is a unique cultural experience that will enhance the students’ language acquisition, provide a support network, and create a safe, enjoyable, and friendly environment for a newly arrived international student. You will benefit from traditional Russian hospitality and will be able to develop friendships that will last beyond your stay in Russia. All the host families are carefully screened for security and appropriate living conditions. The Coordinator of Brown Program will make every effort to place you in a family that meets your needs and expectations. We cannot arrange for housing arrangements prior to or after the program dates.

Study Abroad Refund Policy For Credit Bearing Programs

If a student withdraws from a study abroad program during the first 3 weeks of the program, she/he is eligible for a refund of the Brown payments based on the schedule below. Brown is not responsible for indirect costs paid directly by the student, including, but not limited to, passport fees, vaccinations, and transportation costs, even when these expenses are directly related to program participation. The schedule below excludes the $300.00 program deposit paid at the time of initial enrollment (typically February of the program year).

Prior to program start, students will receive a full refund less $300 deposit. Students withdrawing before the end of the first week of the program will receive a 75% refund less the $300 deposit. Students withdrawing before the end of the second week will receive a 50% refund less the $300 deposit. Students withdrawing before the end of the third week will receive a 25% refund less the $300 deposit. No refunds will be issued after the end of the third week.

For students who leave because of a medical or family emergency, the same refund policy applies. A student who is suspended, dismissed, or withdraws while under investigation for misconduct, will not have program payments refunded.
