It is a testament to the special ethos of the College that, once at Brown, students quickly engage not only in the intellectual rigors of the classroom, but also in activities that complement and enhance their academic pursuits. Student activities accommodate some 200 organized groups and a wide range of interests:artistic, literary, theatrical, musical, journalistic, political, international, environmental, religious, ethnic, and recreational.

Student Activities Night, during the orientation program, will be an opportunity to hear about many clubs and organizations. Student groups can make an appointment with this office to receive advising and support regarding programmming, student leadership and budget issues. It is also a whirlwind, with sensory bombardment from all directions. If you don’t quite find what you’re looking for, head for the Student Activities Office (first floor of Faunce House) or to the Web for a list of all student organizations. If you can’t find what you need in that list, be persistent. Ask around. Success in extracurricular activities, just as with the Brown curriculum, depends on initiative. Keep an eye on kiosks, billboards, and other public postings of information. And remember, if you can’t find the group you’re looking for, you can always start it.

The Student Activities Office (SAO), located in 123 Faunce House, is the financial center of all student organizations, as well as the location of their mailboxes. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 401 863-2341.
