Storm Plans

In the event of severe storm conditions, the storm plan will go into effect. There is a storm plan for Baccalaureate and a storm plan for Commencement. If the plan is enacted, it will be announced on the Brown University home page (www.brown.edu), a message will be recorded on the rain line (401) 863-2474, and a text sent to seniors’ cell phones. Additionally, a yellow pennant will be flown on the College Green flagpole to announce the Commencement storm plan.

If the Baccalaureate Storm Plan is enacted ...

Seniors should report directly to the First Baptist Church in America at 1:45 p.m. to be seated by the Faculty Ushers.

Families may watch a live broadcast of the service in upper and lower Salomon or Sayles Hall, or hear an audio-cast in Manning Chapel.

College Green ushers report to the Welcome Hut on the College Green for assignment to Salomon, Sayles and Manning Chapel; two ushers will be assigned to Waterman Street to direct any seniors to the First Baptist Church; several ushers will remain on the College Green to direct families and guests into the simulcast locations.

Procession ushers should report directly to the First Baptist Church and remain outdoors to assist in corralling students on Waterman Street and the sidewalks leading up to the church, and to assist in the placement of food and beverage into available trash barrels before students enter the church.

Platform party and their assigned ushers should report directly to the lower level of the First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Entrance should be made by the south side door at ground level (this enters directly into the Fellowship Hall area where the Platform Party may wait).

Participants in the service (students, Chaplains and religious affiliates) and their assigned ushers should report directly to the lower level of the First Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Entrance should be made by the south side door at ground level (this enters directly into the Fellowship Hall area where the Platform Party may wait).

If the Commencement Storm Plan is enacted ...

The Commencement procession will be cancelled, and the University Ceremony will be moved indoors and begin at 12:00 pm.

Undergraduates should report directly to the Pizzitola Sports Center by 11:30 am.

Parents and guests of undergraduates should go to Salomon Center (videocast), Sayles Hall (videocast) or Meehan Auditorium (videocast) for a broadcast of the University Ceremony. Should graduating students decide to pass through the Van Wickle gates, they will remain open until 6:00 pm on Monday.

Please note that the information for the Graduate School and the Medical School is listed on their respective sites.

The SafeRide Shuttle will have expanded hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The shuttle stops remain the same (PDF).
