Commencement A-Z information for medical school degree recipients

Application to Graduate

The University can only graduate and generate diplomas for students who file the “Application to Graduate” form. This form will also enable you to list your name as you would like it to appear on your diploma, as well as in the various commencement programs. This form MUST be completed and either mailed, faxed or dropped off to the Registrar’s Office no later than April 30. You can download this form.

Attending Graduation

If you will not be participating in the Medical School procession and graduation ceremony, please contact Donna Arruda so she can arrange to have your diploma mailed to you.

CAP AND GOWN

The Brown Bookstore is currently updating their on-line order form so students can rent academic regalia from their web site. This information should be available shortly after March 1. All graduating medical students who are participating in the procession and graduation ceremony are required to rent the Medical School cap, gown and hood.

Class photograph

Your class photograph will be taken on Sunday morning, May 24, at 9:00 AM, at the Marcus Aurelius Statue (Behind Sayles Green on Lincoln Field). These 8x10 class photographs will be available at the cost of $15.00 each. Checks should be made payable to “Brown University” and mailed to: Donna Arruda, Office of Medical Student Affairs, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, 97 Waterman Street, Box G-A2, Providence, RI 02912. The deadline for ordering a class photograph is May 29, 2009.

Class Speaker

All graduating medical students are eligible to run for class speaker. Any student interested should submit a speech guideline to Donna Arruda via email (roughly one to two pages) on what he/she will be speaking on. The speech guidelines will then be made accessible to students to vote on. More information to follow.

DIPLOMA Pronunciation

In order to assist us with the proper pronunciation of your name at the graduation ceremony on May 24, please email your name, written phonetically and with emphasized syllables in caps, to Donna Arruda by May 1. Example: April Augustino [ey-pruhl aw-guh-steen-OH]

Graduation Questionnaire:

Please remember to complete the Medical School Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) which is provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges and its member medical schools. Your input will provide valuable information to our medical school concerning medical education issues at both our school as well as nationally. The website for the GQ will be available shortly after March 1.

Graduation Video

The Student Affairs Office hires a professional videographer to record the Medical School graduation ceremony. If you would like to purchase a copy of the 90-minute ceremony, the cost is $25. Checks should be made payable to “Brown University” and mailed to: Donna Arruda, Office of Medical Student Affairs, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, 97 Waterman Street, Box G-A2, Providence, RI 02912. The deadline for ordering a graduation ceremony video is May 29, 2009.

Handicapped Parking

To arrange for handicapped parking for Commencement Day (May 24), download a handicapped parking permit request form and return it to University Events, Box 1920. Accessible space is very limited—so please take care of this right away if you have family members who require handicapped parking.

A photographer has been hired to take pictures of the graduates as they are hooded in the First Unitarian Church. These photographs (5x7) will be available at the cost of $15.00 each. Checks should be made payable to “Brown University” and mailed to: Donna Arruda, Office of Medical Student Affairs, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, 97 Waterman Street, Box G-A2, Providence, RI 02912. Senior Week

There will be many activities planned for the week prior to graduation, and further details will be sent to graduating seniors via email.

Storm Plan

In the event of severe storm conditions, the storm plan will go into effect. If the storm plan is in effect, it will be announced on the Brown University home page (www.brown.edu), a yellow pennant will be flown on the College Green flagpole and a message will be left at 401 863-2474. All processions are cancelled, and Medical School participants are to be in their seats at the First Unitarian Church by 11:00 a.m.

Tickets are not required for the graduation ceremony in the First Unitarian Church, and there is no limit to the amount of guests students can invite. All are welcome!

Unpaid Bills
