No idea where to start?
Just got told you're responsible for the department's
web site? This is the right place for you. This section
will get you started from the ground up.
First
Step
The first thing you need to find out is what server
your web site resides on. If you have no idea what
a server is, or why your web site needs to be on a
server, you can refer to our explanation about How
the Web Works. To determine which server your
web site is on, simply type in your home page into
a browser and hit Enter or Return. If the address
of your web page ends up being http://www.brown.edu/
with a whole bunch of other words after that, then
you are on Brown's central web server. If the address
of your page remains something like:
http://envstudies.brown.edu
http://www.cs.brown.edu
with more after each of those, then you are on a departmental
server. Your department owns and maintains its own
server, an you will need to ask around to determine
who is the server's administrator, as only that person
can give you an account on that server.
If you determine that you are
on Brown's central web server, you will need your
own account. Even if your department already has a
web site, you will need your own account.
