Summary of Service
Note: this applies only to www.brown.edu.
Some departments have their own servers. Other departments
have outsourced their web hosting.

Availability:
- Available for: ”Officially
recognized” Departments, Offices, Student Groups,
Research Groups, Courses.
- Not available for: Individuals,
unofficial groups, etc.

Information
Provider:
- The group should identify
one or more information providers for the web.
(Multiple people can edit the same space.)
- An “Information Provider
Contract” needs to be filled out and sent in.
- An account will be
created and information will be emailed to the
user.
- Web Hosting Service Features
- What’s available to web publishers?
- Shell access to a UNIX
account
- Secure file transfer access (SFTP)
- HTML pages, images, media,
etc.
- WebAuth lets you restrict pages to NetID/Password
- PHP (running in safe mode)

Support for Brown Web Publishers
Web Publishing Tools
CIS supports (at the partial level)
the following tools for web publishing. Users may
email help@brown.edu
for assistance with installing or using any of the
following:
- WinSCP/Putty(Windows SFTP client
for moving your files to and from web servers)
- Fugu (Macintosh SFTP client
for moving your files to and from web servers)
- Terminal (Macintosh SFTP client that comes with your Mac)
In addition
to these tools, CIS recommends two HTML editors:
- Macromedia Contribute - available from http://software.brown.edu
- Macromedia Dreamweaver - available from http://software.brown.edu
Other web publishing tools available
for web publishers at Brown include:
- Photoshop - an image-editing
application, available on the Applications server
- Adobe Acrobat - the PDF file
creation application, available on the Applications
server
