Need some help on getting your web page files from
your computer to the web server? Here's some information
on how to use your SFTP client.
Two SFTP clients are supported at Brown, one for
Windows and one for Mac. On Windows, it is SSH and
on Mac it is MacSFTP. If you don't already have one
of these, it can be downloaded from Software
Services.
For Windows: SSH
For Mac: MacSFTP
Answers to other SFTP related questions:
What is SFTP?
SFTP stands for the Secure File Transfer
Protocol. You will use an SFTP client to send
your web page files from your computer to the web
server. SFTP clients that are supported by CIS are
SSH for the Windows platform and MacSFTP for the Macintosh
platform. SSH and MacSFTP can be downloaded from the
Software
Services site.
Why do I need to do this?
We shut off clear-text FTP because when you
log in with your username and password, people snooping
on our network can capture all information sent. If
someone captures your username and password, they
become you at Brown University, and can do everything
that you can do with that information at Brown. For
this reason, we are making it so you can only use
an FTP client that uses encryption. Encryption means
that all information sent on the network will be jumbled
in a way that only your computer and the server can
easily decode the information being sent. Other people
snooping on the network would still be able to decode
the information, but the level of expertise to do
this is much higher, and hopefully they have little
interest in your username and password.
Can I still use Fetch or
WS-FTP?
No. These only support clear-text
FTP and at Brown, we have closed this down. To connect
to our web server, you will need to use a file transfer
client that supports encryption. Examples of Brown
recommended and supported clients are WinSCP, Fugu (Mac)
and MacSFTP.
I use Dreamweaver to upload
my files. Can I still do that?
Yes. But only if you have Dreamweaver MX 2004 or newer. Any
older version of Dreamweaver does not support SFTP.
