Brown Learning Community announces spring course catalog

The Brown Learning Community offers 170 non-credit courses this spring, ranging from comet spotting and bird watching to selections in fitness and career development. A new five-course series leads to a Certificate in the Practice of Management.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Some 170 courses are available this spring through the Brown Learning Community (BLC). Classes include perennial favorites such as ballroom dancing, writing skills and computing basics. In addition, this semester offers a special class focusing on the arrival of Comet Hale-Bopp, and field trips to spot the returning songbirds and other migrants to the area.

Numerous career development courses are available. New this semester is "The Practice of Management," a program of five courses developed by Barrett Hazeltine, the Brown professor most frequently honored for excellence by the student body. The program was created in conjunction with leaders in the Rhode Island business community. Those who complete the full program (Fundamentals of Management, Qualitative Methods, Marketing and Strategic Management, Human Behavior and Organizational Structure, and Communications) with an overall average of B will receive a Certificate in the Practice of Management.

The BLC also offers its popular Junior Scientists program for children ages 9-12, a similar program, Simply Science, for children ages 6-8, and its Brown Community for Learning in Retirement seminars.

For a catalog and registration information, contact the BLC office at 401/863-3452 or visit the World Wide Web page at http://www.brown.edu/Administration/BLC/
